Catherine Ward Bishir was born in 1942 in Lexington, Ky., daughter of Margaret Norris Byrn Ward (1912-1993), a home economics teacher, and William Smith Ward (1907-1994), a professor of English at the University of Kentucky. She received her B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1964 and her M.A. from Duke University in 1965. Since 1971, she has been involved in architectural history and historic preservation planning, chiefly under the auspices of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History, where, as of 1995, she was Architectural Survey Coordinator.
