Arrived in Melbourne in 1839. Appointed Commissioner of Requests, 1842; Solicitor General, 1850, and a Judge of the Supreme Court 1851. First Chancellor of Melbourne University, and President of Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria, Victorian Commissioner to the London Exhibition of 1862, and the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876.

Judge, first chancellor of the University of Melbourne and first president of the Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria. Established a Court of Request in 1842. Appointed Solicitor-General in 1851. 1852 became Judge of the Supreme Court.
