Michigan. Dept. of Public Health.
Biographical notes:
The State Board of Health was established by Public Act 81 of 1873. The Board was dissolved in 1919 by Public Act 146 which vested powers and duties of the Board in the State Commissioner of Health, supported by the State Health Advisory Council. The commissioner was responsible for protecting the public health and the prevention of diseases. This included administering the public health code, collecting vital statistics, distributing state funds for the care of tuberculosis patients, and approving plans for public water and sewerage systems. The Executive Organization Act of 1965 (Public Act 380) established the Michigan Department of Public Health. All powers of the State Health Commissioner and advisory commission were transferred to the new department. The department was reorganized again in 1996 when it was merged with the Michigan Department of Mental Health to become the Michigan Department of Communiity Health.
