Biographical notes:

The Marmon Motor Car Co. began as a millstone manufacturing company, Nordyke & Marmon Company, in Richmond, Ind. in 1851. It moved to Indianapolis in the 1870s, where the first car was produced in 1902. In 1911 the company produced the first car to win the Indianapolis 500 race. In 1926 the company became the Marmon Motor Car Co. It failed in 1933 because of the Depression. The truck division, the Marmon-Herrington Company, founded in 1931, remained in operation until 1964.
