Born in Augusta County, Va. on May 17, 1796, John Allen came to Mich. in Jan. 1824. He and E.W. Rumsey were the first settlers of Ann Arbor, named in honor of their wives, both named Ann. John Allen owned much land, but lost a great deal during the panic of 1837. He published the Western Emigrant, the first newspaper in Washtenaw County (Mich.). Allen studied law and was admitted to the bar. He went to Calif. in 1850, and died there on Mar. 11, 1851.
