Richard Daintree was born in Huntingdon, England in 1832, the son of a prosperous farmer. He was educated at Bedford Grammar School and Christ's College, Cambridge. He came to Australia in 1852 and in February 1854 joined the Geological Survey of Victoria. In 1856 he returned to England for six months and studied chemistry, assaying and photography. He returned to Australia and the Geological Survey of Victoria in 1857. In 1864, he moved to Maryvale in the Upper Burdekin in Queensland and began a number of exploratory and prospecting trips. In 1868, Daintree was appointed Government Geologist for North Queensland. In 1871, he returned to England and became Queensland Agent-General in 1872. He retired from the position in 1876 and died in 1878.
