Biographical notes:
Benedict College founded in 1870 under the auspices of the American Home Missionary Society of the Baptist Church as Benedict Institute when Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Pawtucket, R.I., gave the society $5,000, a small bequest from her husband; originally designed to educate ministers and teachers the institution is now independent. Academic Affairs unit coordinates the educational programs of the College; divided administratively into the divisions of Business, Humanities, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavior Sciences; headed by the vice president for academic affairs is second in authority at the college.
