US Army register, 1851-1879 lists Welch, Hugh P. and Whiting, Henry; Welch apptd 2nd Lt Corps of Artillary October 27, 1820; to 4th Artillery, June 1, 1821; tr to 1st Artillery August 16, 1821; resigned April 30, 1826. Appointed from Connecticut.
Whiting apptd Cornet of 1st Light Dragoons, 1808...Capt in 5th Infantry March 3, 1817; tr to 1st Artillery June 1, 1821...Brevet Brig. General February 23, 1847; died September 16, 1851. (Another Capt Whiting was continuously in the Infantry; disbanded June 1, 1821).
Same volume of the Register gives successive organizational charts. From 1815 to 1821 the artillery consisted of 1 regiment of light artillery, and 1 Corps of Artillery: 4,743 men in all. From March 2, 1821 the artillery consistd only of 4 regiments: 2,184 men.
