Biographical notes:

Soon after Judge Walter Van Dyke's admittance to the Bar in Cleveland he joined a company to head out west in search of gold. They left Cleveland in May of 1849 by steamer for Chicago where they organized an outfit for the journey across the plains. They reached California around the end of 1849.
