Frederick of Mömpelgard (d. 1608) became the Duke of Württemberg in 1593. Robert, Earl of Essex (1586-1601) was a favorite of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, and occupied a variety of military posts. However, after his failure as Lord Lieutenant and his defiance of the Queen, he was tried for treason and executed in 1601.
