Kepes, Juliet

Biographical notes:

Juliet Kepes, nee Appleby, was born June 29, 1919, in London, England. She came to the United States in 1937. She studied art in England, and later at the Chicago School of Design. She began illustrating and writing children's books in the 1950s, and received a Caldecott Honor citation for Five Little Monkeys in 1952. Many of her books feature animals, especially monkeys, and are noted for their bright colors and style, along with a sense of humor and playfulness. Her texts are simple and easy for children to understand and appreciate. She has also illustrated other authors' works over the past few decades.
