Biographical notes:

Fur trader.

Born in Scotland, Laidlaw became a partner in the Columbia Fur Co. in 1822. He remained with the firm when it merged in 1827 with Astor's American Fur Co., and joined Pratte, Chouteau and Company in 1834, when it purchased Astor's interest in the Western Department of the American Fur Co. Laidlaw operated out of Fort Tecumseh, S.D., until 1831 when Fort Pierre replaced it. In 1851, he died insolvent in St. Louis.
