Tschan, Francis Joseph

Francis Joseph Tschan was born January 1, 1881 in Germany. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1901 and the Master of Arts degree in 1903, both from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. In 1916 he received the doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. An honorary doctor of laws degree was conferred on him by Loyola University in 1933 and a doctorate of humane letters by St. Vincent's College at Latrobe, PA in 1951. Dr. Tschan taught history at the University of Chicago, Yale University and Carnegie Institute of Technology. He was known as an inspiring teacher, a member of the Mediaeval Academy, of the American Catholic Historical Society, and the American Historical Association. His major writings include Bernward of Hildesheim, and the editing of Helmold's Chronicle of the Slavs in the Records of Civilization series of Columbia University (1935). Dr. Tschan completed the translating and editing of Adam of Bremen's History of the Archbishops of Hamburg-Bremen, for the Records of Civilization series just prior to his death on July 24, 1957.
