Philip Kramer Bondy was born in New York City in 1917. He graduated from Columbia University, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1942. After an internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, he completed a residency at Emory University and joined the staff as an assistant professor. Bondy came to the Yale School of Medicine in 1952 to head the metabolism section of the Department of Internal Medicine, becoming chairman of the department in 1965. His tenure at Yale, with a five year respite (1972-1977) as professor of medicine at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden in London, lasted thirty-seven years.
