Stevenson family.
Biographical notes:
Collection throws significant light on the operations of a mid-nineteenth century capitalist, William Stevenson, who lived in North Argyle, Washington County, conducted a general merchandising business there, first alone, and after 1849 in partnership with a nephew, John S. Stewart, and who invested in local mortgages (1839-1852). His investments in mortgages amounted to $95,000 at his death in 1852. He also had stock in banks in Washington, Westchester, and Rensselaer Counties, and held personal notes amounting to more than $23,000.
