United States Bunting Company.
Biographical notes:
Having persuaded Congress to pass a law requiring U.S. flags to be made of domestically produced bunting, General Benjamin F. Butler founded the U.S. Bunting Co. in Lowell, Mass. in 1865. The company was a partnership held by Butler, DeWitt C. Farrington, the manager, and Walter McDaniels, his assistant. In 1913 the mill was incorporated. At that point it was controlled by the Stevens family and closely connected to the Lawrence Manufacturing Co. It was the first company in the United States to manufacture bunting and had a contract with the federal government as the exclusive supplier of bunting (flags) to the military until well after World War I. The company went out of business in 1937.
