Biographical notes:

Max Heirich was a graduate student in sociology at the University of California, Berkeley at the beginning of the Free Speech Movement. His dissertation, "Demonstrations at Berkeley: collective behavior during the Free Speech Movement of 1964-1965," (c1968) documented the developments of the FSM which was published as "The beginning: Berkeley, 1964" (c1970) and later expanded and published as "The spiral of conflict: Berkeley, 1964" (c1971).
