Biographical notes:

The College of Social and Behavioral Science, in addition to the Colleges of Humanities and Science, was formed in 1970 when the College of Letters and Science was reorganized. During the period covered by the majority of this collection (1979-1989). The college consisted of the seven major departments of Anthropology, Economics, Family and Consumer Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology; the three Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science, and Naval Science; and the research and instructional institutes of the American West Center, the Archeological Center, the Center for Public Affairs and Administration, and the Hinckley Institute of Politics. The College also provided relevant courswork to the Middle East Center, the Minority Human Services Training Program, and the Women's Studies Program.

The College of Social and Behavioral Science, along with the Colleges of Humanities and Science, were created when the existing College of Letters and Science was reorganized in 1970. Initially, the new college included the departments of Aerospace Studies, Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Military Science, Naval Science, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology as well as the following research & teaching institutes: the American West Center, Center for Historical Research, Center for Public Administration and Affairs, Hinckley Institute, Institute of Government, and the Middle East Center.

During the period covered by this collection, the College of Social and Behavioral Science underwent some major changes. First, during the academic year of 1974-1975, the department of Home Economics was moved from the College of Education and brought into the College of Social and Behavioral Science as the Department of Family and Consumer Studies. This period also saw the advent of the Women's Studies Program at the University of Utah.
