Conservationist and lawyer, born 1947. After completing a Bachelor of Law degree (1970) and a Diploma in Education (1972) Toyne worked in Central Australia from 1973-1986, mainly representing Aboriginal people in a wide range of legal matters, particularly in the area of land rights. From 1986-1992 he was Director of the Australian Conservation Foundation and in 1993 he was retained as a consultant advising the Federal Government on the development of a response to the Mabo judgement and the draft legislation.
