Nobile was an Italian aeronautical engineer who designed airships for use in Arctic exploration. He flew over the North Pole with Lincoln Ellsworth and Roald Amundsen in the Norge in 1926. In 1928 he flew over the North Pole in the Italia but crashed and had to be rescued.
