The Division of Transportation Districts was first organized within the Dept. of Transportation (WIHV85-A1884) in 1979. In 1985 it changed status to a bureau within the Division of Highways and Transportation Services (WIHV86-A1913). In 1997, it re-assumed the status of a division. In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, this form of name is used for all appropriate records dating 1979-present.

The Division of Transportation Districts consists of a central office staff and eight district offices. The division is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the State Trunk Highway System and 640 miles of Interstate highways. The district offices serve as liaison between the department and local government agencies, and they work with local representatives to define community transportation needs.
