Biographical notes:

Van Zandt Smith was a prominent Fort Worth attorney, and a grandson of Fort Worth pioneer Major K. M. Van Zandt. He was born in 1899, the son of Leroy Smith and Ida Van Zandt Smith. His mother, Ida Van Zandt Smith, was a daughter of K. M. Van Zandt and his first wife. Smith was a veteran of the First World War. He attended the University of Texas at Austin but received his undergraduate degree from Princeton. He took his law degree from the Cumberland Law School in Cumberland, Tennessee. After law school he joined his father's law firm of Smith, Young, and Smith. He later formed the partnership of Smith, Holloway, and Hudson. Smith specialized in corporate law and did a considerable amount of estate work. Smith managed the corporate and financial affairs of the K. M. Van Zandt Land Company, and the business affairs of the heirs of Major Van Zandt. Smith married the former Ruth Elvin. They had no children, although his wife had a daughter from a previous marriage. Mrs. Smith died in 1972 and Van Zandt Smith died on March 20, 1981.
