Foster, Kate
Variant namesBiographical notes:
Kate Adele Foster was born in 1881. She worked with the YWCA her whole life, starting a "Hostess House" in Beamsville, Ont., for the Flying Corps in 1917, and later becoming president of the Y in Woodstock, Ont. After the First World War, she became interested in helping immigrant girls arriving in Canada. In 1933, after a second meeting of the Conference of Nationality was held in Toronto by the YWCA, the Council of Friendship was formed, with Foster as its secretary. The Council was set up to deal with the problems of new Canadians and to help them integrate into Canadian life. Foster published a book, Our Canadian Mosaic, as a result of her survey of immigrant problems in 1925 in the west.
