Kenneth Richard Gibson was born December 12, 1895, in Dunbar, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1918, and earned his master's degree in public health in 1938. Between 1943 and 1946, he pursued additional graduate coursework at the School of Public Health. In 1921, he was appointed director of the Bureau of Dentistry and Oral Hygiene of the Michigan Department of Health. He served for three years until 1924, when he returned to private practice.
In 1929, Gibson was named director of the Dental Division of the Children's Fund of Michigan, a charitable fund established by Senator James Couzens for the care of indigent children in the state. Gibson served in this capacity until 1948. From 1948 to 1954, Gibson served as the director of the Child Health Division of the Fund. In addition, Gibson was administrator of the Northern Michigan Children's Clinic at Marquette and the Central Michigan Children's Clinic at Traverse City, and oversaw the Fund's eye program from 1948 until the mid 1950s.
Gibson served as director of the Michigan Association of Public Health, Dentists and Dental Hygienists, president of the School Health Association, president of the Michigan Public Health Association, and president of the Michigan State Society for the Promotion of Children's Dentistry. He died December 15, 1959.
