Biographical notes:

Stewart Mechie was born on the 7th November, 1897 and died on the 3rd March, 1981 . He was educated at Perth Academy and went on to study at the University of Glasgow . During the 1st World War, he served as a Private in the Black Watch, before returning to his studies, and graduating with an MA in 1921 . He continued his studies at the Glasgow College of the United Free Church (later Trinity College, Glasgow). From 1926-1936 he served in the Crown Church, Inverness and from 1936-1950 in St Anne's in Corstorphine. In 1950 , he was appointed lecturer in Ecclesiastical History at Trinity College, Glasgow, where he remained until his retirement in 1964. During his time there he first held the post of Clerk of Senate of the College, and later of Librarian. Some of his major publications include: Great Men and Movements in the History of the Church: the Office of the High Lord Commissioner (1957); the Cunningham Lectures on The Church and the Scottish Develpoment (1960); and between 1961 and 1963 he also wrote articles on Education for the Ministry in Scotland since the Reformation which were published in Records of Scottish Church History .
