Biographical notes:

Russell Chandler was a religion writer for the Los Angeles Times newspaper from 1974 to 1992. He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and wrote several books on religious topics, including Understanding the New Age (1989), Racing toward 2001: The Forces Shaping America's Religious Future (1992), Doomsday: The End of the World - A View through Time (1993), and Feeding the Flock: Restaurants and Churches You'd Stand in Line For (1998).

Chandler was president of the Religion Newswriters Association (RNA) and won several awards for religion reporting, including the RNA's John Templeton Reporter of the Year Award three times. In 2002, he and his wife, Marjorie Lee Chandler, established the nation's first secular religion reporting award for student journalists.
