Biographical notes:

Amos Cherry moved with his family to Iowa from New York in 1856. He was a prominent Johnson County farmer and served terms as Lincoln Township clerk, secretary of the school board and Johnson County treasurer. On September 1, 1861 he enlisted in Company B of the 14th Iowa Infantry. Along with companies A and C of the same regiment his company was sent to fight against the Indians on the frontier. The companies left Iowa City on November 1, 1861 and arrived a month later at Fort Rundell in Dakota. In the spring of 1863 Company B was transferred to the 7th Iowa Cavalry and joined the Northwestern Indian Expedition led by General Alfred Sully. Cherry mustered out in October 1864 at the end of his three-year enlistment period.
