Physician, writer, and community activist Clotilde P. Garcia was born on 11 January 1917, daughter of Mexican school teachers. Garcia grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas. She earned a B.A. (1938) and M.Ed. (1959) from the University of Texas at Austin, and an M.D. (1954) from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Also known as Dr. Cleo, Garcia taught school before becoming a physician and surgeon. She participated in many community and Mexican American organizations, and served on several advisory and executive boards on the county, state, and national levels. She published historical works dealing with South Texas and northern Mexico.
