T. Noel Stern received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942. During WWII he worked on dairy and fruit farms in Pennsylvania as a Quaker conscientious objecter, and after the war he began his university teaching career. He joined the faculty of UMD in 1964 and founded the political science department. He retired in 1985 as Professor Emeritus.

T. Noel Stern, a Quaker educator, married Katherine Frances Kirk in 1940. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, in 1964, founding the Political Science Department. Both Sterns were active in North Dartmouth Monthly Meeting and New England Yearly Meeting.
