Biographical notes:

John Selden (1584-1654) was a lawyer, parliamentarian and a scholar. His De Diis Syris (1617) established his credentials as an orientalist, which were consolidated by his later studies in rabbinical law. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography .

John Selden was a legal historian and antiquarian whose works included the influential History of Tithes (1628) and De jure naturali (1640). He is also known for the posthumously published Table-Talk (1689), short comments on religious and moral issues.
