Anacortes Lutheran Church (Anacortes, Wash.)
Biographical notes:
In December of 1909 a group of Norwegian Lutheran men met with Rev. A. E. Moe of Stanwood to organize a Norwegian Lutheran Church in Anacortes. A committee was named to contact other Norwegians and find a suitable location for a church. By March of 1910 the group adopted their constitution, found a suitable site for the church, accepted building plans, and called Rev. Moe to be the first pastor of the Anacortes Norwegian Lutheran Church. The first worship services were held in the new building on 20th and “O” Avenue on August 14, 1910. There was also a Norwegian Lutheran congregation meeting at Lake Campbell which had organized in 1906, being served first by Rev. Sand. When he left in 1908, the congregation was served by pastors from Anacortes Lutheran. In 1935 many of this group joined Anacortes Lutheran. Zion Lutheran, a Swedish congregation across the street from Anacortes Lutheran, was dissolved in 1936, and many members of that congregation joined Anacortes as well. Early in 1937 the congregation bought the Swedish church and that became Anacortes Lutheran Church, the name being adopted in 1942.
