Biographical notes:

Joseph W. Stow, early San Francisco businessman and philanthropist, was associated in several business enterprises with William C. Ralston, president of the Bank of California, which made loans to mines after their appraisal. Stow received the reports and sold mining machinery from his hardware warehouse. Ralston, Edward J. Pringle, and Stow were partners in an unsuccessful venture to treat refactory ores, called the Hagan Process for the Disintegration of Ores.
