James Atkins (1850-1923) was a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; the bishop of North Carolina; the president of Asheville Female College, 1879-1889; and the president of Emory and Henry College, 1893-1896. He was married to Ella Maria Branner and they had a son, James Atkins, Jr., a real estate broker of Waynesville, N.C.
