Margaret Taylor Johnstone is listed in the Annual report of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, between 1907 and 1945, as an Honorary Fellow for Life. Between 1907 and 1924 the Annual report gives her surname as "Johnston;" entries for subsequent years use the form "Johnstone," which is the form used on the legal papers pertaining to her posthumous bequest to the Museum. She died Jan. 14, 1943 in Nice, France. Johnstone was a niece of John Taylor Johnston, first President of the Museum (1870-1889). She made gifts of lace to the Museum, beginning in 1905, and gifts to its library, beginning in 1902. The first version of her lace classification was accepted by the Director of the Museum, Sir Caspar Purdon Clarke, in 1906.
