Biographical notes:

Biographical Note: Alexander Rourke Butler was professor of Humanities at Michigan State University.

He was born in Dover, New Hampshire February 27, 1920 and received the AB degree from Harvard in 1942. Butler's graduate studies in history were done at Johns Hopkins where he received the Ph. D. in 1953. Professor Butler began teaching at Michigan State in 1953 and held a concurrent position as Fulbright lecturer in American History at the University of Helsinki, 1960-1961. In 1957, Butler established the Alexander R. Butler Prize at Hopkins. The prize is awarded annually in the Dept. of History for the best research paper written by a first year graduate student. Alexander Rourke Butler died in 1985.
