Biographical notes:

William Gifford, English satirist and editor. His verse satire The Baviad was published in 1791, and he was the editor of the short-lived tory sponsored Anti-Jacobin, or Weekly Examiner. Gifford served as editor of The Quarterly Review from 1809 to 1824.
