Biographical notes:

The Elliott family has been in Lawrence, Kansas since 1854, when Robert Elliott arrived there from Indiana. He married Hattie Anderson in 1867, and they had four children, one of whose family, Samuel Steele Elliott, is the focus of this collection. Samuel Steele Elliott was born June 18, 1870 and lived in Lawrence until his death on November 17, 1957. He married Jeannette Herriott in 1894, and they had six children, one of which was Maude Herriott Elliott, who was a school teacher under pioneer conditions in Finney County and Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Kansas from 1929 to 1968.
