Biographical notes:
Ralph Stockman was born at Leith, Edinburgh in 1861, the second son of W J Stockman. He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh. He went on to study at Edinburgh, Strassburg and Vienna Universities. He was a Research fellow with the British Medical Association. From 1883-1889 he was an Assistant at Edinburgh University. He then became a Lecturer on Materia Medica in the School of Medicine, Edinburgh. In 1897 he was appointed the Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Glasgow. He remained in this post until his retirement in 1936. From 1900-1926 he was also a Physician at Glasgow’s Western Infirmary. Ralph Stockman was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1920 he wrote Rheumatism and Arthritis. He also wrote numerous articles on medicine. Scottish Biographies 1938, (1938, London & Glasgow).
