Joseph Showalter Smith (1824-1884) journeyed from Kansas, near the Missouri line (May 22, 1844) to Oregon City, Oregon (May 22, 1845).
He started his trip with Ford company but separated, spending winter at Fort Winter. He reached Whitman mission (March 28, 1845) and stayed six weeks before proceeding to Oregon
