Edmund G. Love was born in Flushing, Michigan. He earned a master's degree at the University of Michigan and taught at Flint Northern High School in 1937-1941. After serving in World War II, Love moved to New York City where he achieved prominence as author of books, notably Subways are for Sleeping about his experiences sleeping on the New York subway when he couldn't afford housing. The book was later made into a successful Broadway play. Love also wrote The Situation in Flushing about a boy's love of trains in the early 1900s; Hanging On about his family's Depression-era experiences, and A Shipment of Tarts about prostitutes shipped out of town down the Mississippi River. Edmund G. Love died on August 30, 1990.
