Glenn H. Brown was a renowned professor of chemistry and a pioneer in liquid crystals research. He was born in Logan, Ohio in 1915 and earned a B.S. from Ohio University, an M.S. from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He began his career at the University of Mississippi, followed by the University of Vermont and University of Cincinnati before arriving at Kent State University in 1960. He was chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1960-1965, then became Director of the Liquid Crystal Institute from 1965-1983. By the time of Brown's retirement in 1985, liquid crystals had evolved from a little-known, scantly-funded field into a highly respected discipline with applications in the medical profession, the armed forces, NASA, and numerous other areas of research. In 1986, the institute he founded was renamed the Glenn H. Brown Liquid Crystal Institute. He died in Kent, Ohio on April 18, 1995.
