1838 Bengal (later Royal) Engineers; 1842 served in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842); 1846 served in the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845-1846); 1847 employed in a revenue survey in the Jullunder Doab; boundary commissioner; 1852-1853 deputy-commissioner, Batala; 1853-c 1860 civil and military charge of Hazara; 1857-1859 served during the Indian Mutiny; 1860-1862 furlough; 1862-1864 commissioner of the Dorajat; 1864-1866 commissioner of Peshawar; 1866 retired on health grounds.
