Caroline Kathryn Allen was a taxonomist specializing in the Lauraceae. She served the New York Botanical Garden as Honorary Collaborator in Lauraceae (1951-1959) and as Research Associate (1959-1974). She was born in Pawling, N.Y., daughter of Howard N. Allen, member of the N.Y. State Assembly. Her training was at Vassar and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Her early studies were in Halenia. She served as Assistant in the Herbarium at the Arnold Arboretum. Her work with Bassett Maguire on determining the Lauraceae in his "Plant Explorations of Guiana" led to her career at the New York Botanical Garden. Allen and A.J.G.H. Kostermans were considered the world experts in Lauraceae. She collected in Trinidad, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico and Surinam. She died in 1975.

After studies at Vassar and the Missouri Botanical Garden (Halenia), she began her professional life at the Arnold Arboretum. She was invited to the New York Botanical Garden by Bassett Maguire where she determined the Lauraceae in all of his work in Tropical America. Soon she and A.J.G.H. Kostermans were the world's experts in Lauraceae. They argued over the genera Ocotea and Nectandra. Allen's collections were in Trinidad, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico and Surinam. Additionally she examined specimens and drew anatomical studies in the major herbaria in the United States, South America and Europe. She died in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1975.
