Biographical notes:
African American politician: elected and appointed office holder including treasurer of Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County commissioner and state legislator for Pasquotank County; on Jan. 26, 1891, he introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly House Bill 383 which would establish an institution of higher learning to be called Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School; bill became law on Mar. 3, 1891; an Elizabeth City StateUniversity dormitory, street, and student loan and scholarship funds are named in his honor.
