Biographical notes:

James Arthur Emmerton (1834-1888) attended Harvard University and was a member of its graduating class of 1855. He was a medical doctor in Salem, Massachusetts. He was active as a local historian in Salem, and an avid genealogist. In 1880, he published a book entitled "A Genealogical Account of Henry Silsbee and Some of his Descendants." In 1886 he wrote another book entitled "Eighteenth Century Baptisms in Salem, Massachusetts,"
