Biographical notes:
This collection of prize-winning essays dates from 1823 to 1992, and comprises essays submitted for a variety of prizes, medals and awards of the University of Glasgow , Scotland. Each essay was usually submitted in a bound volume. The early essays, up until 1856, were submitted anonymously, and almost all are handwritten. The nine hundred and ninety-nine essays cover a wide variety of subjects, the majority of the earliest being classical or theological with later examples of science, sociology, history and education. From 1858, prize winners names were published in the University Calendar where the rules and regulations governing the prizes and the subjects of the essays are also given.
