Biographical notes:

The Jasper Festival was a celebration formed at the invitation of the Jasper Monumental Association in Savannah, Georgia. It was composed of representatives of various civic societies and military organizations. Its charge was the plan the unveiling of the Jasper monument in Madison Square. The monument was dedicated and the festival was held February 22, 23, and 24, 1888. President Grover Cleveland was present on the first day of the festival. The executive committee met occasionally after the festival to discuss the dispensation of the remaining funds. On April 13, 1907, they resolved to turn the remaining funds over to the Georgia Society of Colonial Dames to apply toward a monument honoring General James Oglethorpe.
