Biographical History
Hugh T. Carlisle (1843-?) was born in New York in 1843. On September 19, 1861, Carlisle joined the United States Army at the age of 18, serving as a Private in Captains Fyler's Company D 81st Regiment, in the Ohio Infantry. He served the Union Army from 1861 through April 22, 1863. During his military service he fought in the historic Battle of Shiloh, which took place in Southwestern Tennessee. The Union forced succeeded in pushing back the Confederate forces, but it became know as one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history. In 1880, succeeded in his application to obtain a Homestead Act land grant, consisting of 60 acres in Norton County, Kansas. Carlisle married Mary Lewis on May 24, 1893, in Indiana.
