1777 ensign, 45th regiment of foot; 1783 52nd foot; 1788 captain in the 75th foot; 1790-1792 served in the Third Anglo-Mysore War (1789-1792); c 1792 deputy quartermaster-general to the king's forces in India; c 1793 military secretary to commander-in-chief, Sir Robert Abercromby; 1797 returned to Britain; 1800 lieutenant-colonel of the 10th foot; c 1800-1803 served in Egypt; 1803-1806 commander in the Isle of Thanet; 1806-1807 brigadier-general, British invasions of the Rio de la Plata; 1810-1813 commander-in-chief, Madras; 1811 commander during the invasion of Java; 1813 returned to Britain; c 1821-1822 commander-in-chief, Ireland.
