Biographical notes:

Alma W. Compton, Sr. founded the studio in 1883-1884. On Jan. 28, 1901 the studio became Compton's Art & Music Company and was moved to a new location. By 1958, the name had changed to Compton's Studio. After Alma W. Compton, Sr., the studio was managed in turn by Alma Walter Compton, Jr., Matthew Joseph Compton, and Matthew Glenn Compton. Compton's Studio officially ceased operation in April of 1994.

Alma W. Compton, Sr. was born in England on Sept. 21, 1856. He moved to Ogden, Utah in 1868. His opportunities for schooling were meager and he worked in a broom factory before apprenticing himself to Ogden photographer J.W. Christensen in 1882. In 1883 he rented a photo outfit and traveled through Brigham City, Cache Valley, and around Malad, Idaho. He settled in Brigham City and rented the studio of Jens C. Gasberg, before building his own studio in 1884. In 1886 Compton married Jane Emeline Dalton. The couple had four children who survived to adulthood. He died Mar. 16, 1931.
